Growing areas in schools offer children the benefit of practical hands on activities that motivate and enhance their learning and build self-esteem. They also encourage a deeper understanding of farming and growing and the interdependence between urban and rural communities. Growing areas in schools can stimulate interest in the links between food production, healthy eating and sustainable development.

The Growing Clubs project was one of eight projects in The Food in Schools Programme - a joint venture between the Department of Health and Department for Education and Skills to encourage and enhance food-related initiatives that promote healthy eating in children at school.

How did it work?
To develop a sustainable growing club, a structured process must be followed to identify the schools needs, devlop links with current initiatives and encourage participation and consenus amongst the whole school community.

Throughout the project LTL facilitated a step by step process to develop growing club action plans in each school. The schools also recieved support through training, curriculum linking, network development and resources.

Who was it for?
15 schools across London were selected - including Primary, Secondary and Special schools.
