School Grounds of the Future was a 3-year support programme to demonstrate how school grounds can be high quality environments for children's learning and development and provide an asset for the whole school community.

Supported by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), School Grounds of the Future completed a pilot phase working with twenty pilot schools.  It then entered a wider outreach phase, available to all Local Education Authority schools in England.

The programme aimed to demonstrate what excellence in school grounds design, use and management looks like in practice and how this can help children to develop their academic, social and physical skills to their full potential through active participation in learning, playing and socialising outside the classroom.

How did it work?
The programme supports schools in England who are spending part of their capital allocation on school grounds development. The schools cover a range of sectors and situations and we provie them with a package of training, information, resources and advice to stimulate and support further action.

Who was it for?
The project was open to all LEA maintained schools in England (Secondary, Primary, Nursery and Special Needs).
