Sense of Time and Place was a national pilot project aimed at engaging young people (11-18yrs) and secondary schools in heritage. This pilot ran from May 2001 - December 2002.

How did it work?
Three secondary schools were selected to focus on how schools might engage young people with heritage.

The pilot programme was entitled A Sense of Time and Place to reflect how a personal response to our environment might begin the process of understanding and caring more about the heritage around us.

During a year of activities three very different projects developed. All were considered to be extremely successful by those who participated. Together they have given a real insight into working with young people and finding out what heritage means to them.

Who was it for?
Sense of Time and Place is now recorded and celebrated in a small publication, 'Hearts and Minds' as a series of approaches, techniques and ideas that could help anyone who works with young people (in particular those who work in a formal secondary education sector although many techniques could be transferable).

Sense of Time and Place was designed to be useful to a wide range of people including teachers, education officers, project officers, youth leaders, artists working in education, heritage project workers and community workers.

What should I do now?
If you would like a copy of 'Hearts and Minds', or if you are a secondary school that might like to be included in a future national programme exploring 'heritage' with your own students, please contact Sonia Percival.
